One Piece Concludes a Quarter-Century Era in 2026

It's the end of a long-standing era for long-running series, with Toei Animation revealing a new production schedule for the beloved series, which has run continuously for over a quarter-century and featured dozens of filler arcs. Starting in the new year, after the Egghead Island arc concludes, the animated series will go on a quarterly break until April, when the Elbaph arc begins.

Updated Production Plan

From now on, One Piece will produce a pair of cours every year for a cap of two dozen installments. The studio states this will help the anime to “explore further into the heart of the universe — including more content, rhythm, and timing of the original manga.” Yet, Toei end by promising “thrilling developments” during the hiatus period, which suggests additional related projects, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, set to premiere during this gap.

Learning from Past Breaks

The series anime had a six-month break that started in late 2024 and ended in April 2025. The intermission was for the production team to improve the animation quality and allow the comic to get further ahead to avoid a faster anime pace and repetitive summaries. The show couldn't benefit more from this break, and it has managed to deliver fans with numerous action sequences, high-quality animation, and less filler than previously.

Adopting Modern Trends

Although some recap episodes sprouted up during the recent run, the benefits of this updated approach far surpass the occasional interruption in the action. This additionally allows the original work, which is currently in the middle of the Elbaph arc, to extend its lead on the anime. According to the announcement, this may lead to a single installment of the series adapting a single manga chapter, with some alternatively handling one and a half chapters or more to compensate for scheduling.

It's the end of an era for anime, as the epic saga is the final major title to abandon the old-school way of creation, which prioritized being on air for almost the entire year. This explains why classics such as Bleach, and naturally itself have so many side stories, and the standard of the animation can vary widely between installments and the following. Nowadays, series creation is structured in seasons, with a couple at most releasing each year, allowing for better quality and more faithfulness to the source material.
